Involve more young volunteers with do-it training
Online charity YouthNet is offering bespoke training to help organisations recruit, involve and create volunteering opportunities for 16-25 year olds.
4 February, 2008
The training, 'Recruit, Involve, Create', is available to charities who publicise their volunteering opportunities on YouthNet's volunteering website do-it.org.uk, and covers the best way to involve young people and get the most from their skills.
Felicity Jones, Youth Partnerships Manager at YouthNet says; 'Young people have great skills that can be massively helpful to organisations, especially charities that may not have the budget to recruit experts in specific fields, but need some extra knowledge.
"This training will help organisations use the vast range of skills that young people can offer, and provide the tools to help them use these kind of talents to their benefit."
Organisations can apply to advertise their volunteering opportunities on do-it.org.uk and access the bespoke training. Existing partners include Volunteer Centres, as well as regional and national charities such as The National Trust, Save the Children, Leonard Cheshire, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Shelter.
In addition to the training, do-it.org.uk is developing downloadable materials, available shortly, that will offer guidelines for partners who want to recruit young people and involve them in their work.
One of the ways young people can get involved with YouthNet is by becoming a volunteer peer advisor, giving advice to young people who post their questions on the askTheSite section of YouthNet's other website TheSite.org.
Dharini Patel, a peer advisor for TheSite.org says; "The work has been even better than I thought, it's been really interesting. I'm proud of what I'm doing and I feel like I'm helping people."
