TheSite.org technology survey

TheSite.org hosted a survey on technology in February and March 2007. Respondents were asked which gadgets they owned or had available for their use, and which they would like to own or have use of. Further questions related to use of social networks, internet use through mobile phones, and internet file downloads. A total of 117 respondents completed the survey.

The results:

  • Almost all (98%) survey respondents owned or had use of a mobile phone;
  • At least six in 10 respondents had some form of games console, at least half had access to a digital music player, and at least half had access to digital, cable or satellite TV;
  • Most respondents either purchase all of their gadgets themselves (43% of respondents), or purchase some themselves and receive others as presents (49% of respondents);
  • Only one in 10 (10%) respondents with mobile phones said they change their phones more than once a year. Many (31%) said they only change their phone when it is lost or damaged;
  • Most (90%) respondents with mobile phones said their phones have internet capability, and more than half (56%) have used this capability;
  • Three in 10 (30%) respondents with mobile phones access the internet through their phones regularly;
  • A quarter (25%) of respondents said they contribute to discussion boards on the web, and the same proportion (24%) said they had a page on a social networking site;
  • The most popular social networking sites were MySpace, Facebook and Bebo;
  • Respondents were most likely to download songs and TV programmes from the web (27% and 14% respectively);
  • Almost half (45%) of those with a digital music player copied most of their music files from CDs. Those who downloaded music files were most likely to do so from Limewire or iTunes.
