YouthNet carried out a volunteer satisfaction survey in Summer 2004. It was completed by 1481 respondents.
The results:
- 45% are aged 15-25, 81% are female, and a quarter are from BME groups;
- Two-thirds found out about do-it.org.uk through a search engine or a website link;
- Half had never volunteered before visiting the website;
- People often do not have just one reason for volunteering - for three-quarters one reason is to help others, and for two-thirds, to learn and try new things;
- Practical considerations are important too - for more than half, distance from home is a deciding factor in choosing a position;
- Respondents most commonly describe their volunteering experiences as rewarding, interesting and challenging;
- Volunteering is very important to two-thirds of people.
