Citi Foundation and TheSite.org – £Fiver challenge

What is the project about?

On the 9th March, YouthNet launched a brand new interactive and engaging competition, The Site.org £Fiver Challenge, sponsored by the Citi Foundation. Hosted on Facebook, the competition will challenge young people to demonstrate their creativity by asking them what they would do with just £5. Entrants upload their ideas onto TheSite.org competition Facebook page, and those with the most “likes” at the close of the competition will proceed to the judging round for the chance to win an iPad in one of 6 categories.

What do we aim to achieve from the partnership?

During this time of austerity and the multitude of challenges facing 16-25 year olds, this competition aims to get young people thinking about money in a creative and expressive way. YouthNet will be providing financial education outreach through the delivery of information and content from TheSite.org onto the Facebook platform, directly interacting and engaging with our target audience. Using Facebook will also enable YouthNet to retain and grow an established community of young people, who we can engage, interact and respond to directly. Our success is going to be measured by increases in TheSite.org Facebook members, how many young people join the competition, and from a follow up survey, an increase in young people’s understanding about financial capability issues.

YouthNet created a bespoke PR and marketing plan to cover the entire partnership, to ensure we reach potential participants and to provide coverage of the Citi Foundations support for this project. YouthNet’s Press team secured a fantastic article in The Guardian on the day of launch, providing great coverage for this latest partnership.

Fiona Dawe, Chief Executive of YouthNet:

“It’s no secret that young people in the UK face a very uncertain financial future – largely characterised by soaring youth unemployment and the impending steep rise in tuition fees many face next year.”

“The idea behind this competition is to challenge perceptions of what is possible to achieve on a small budget and encourage entrants to think beyond being resourceful to prove just how imaginative and creative they can be with their money.”
