The Citi Foundation – “Change Through Art” competition

What was the project all about?

The project aimed to provide Citi and YouthNet with a better understanding of young people’s experience of, and attitude towards, the recession. This was done by conducting a bespoke piece of researchin which we explored young people’s views via an online discussion group and a survey on TheSite.org. YouthNet was able to use the combination of quantative and qualitative research to enhance our understanding of the financial challenges facing young people and improve our online support for young people on this topic.

To supplement the research we also launched an art competition, challenging and inspiring young people to use their creative skills to express how they felt about the credit crunch and the impact the financial climate was having on their lives. This also offered them a way to support and inform their peers, share their experiences and see their work published online. Additionally the competition was a great demonstrated the Citi Foundation’s commitment to helping young people improve financial capability.

Partnership achievements

22 young people took part in an online focus group, and a further 532 young people completed an online survey. This provided invaluable insights into young people’s attitudes to the financial crisis and money issues which in turn helped us shape our financial content and support on TheSite.org.

The competition and partnership was promoted to 130,000 young people through YouthNet’s online services, and we secured over 16,000 visits to the competition website.
Through a proactive media campaign some excellent coverage of the partnership was secured, through both television and newspaper. This included The Politics Show, BBC, Metro Online and regional newspapers.

We received almost 100 entries to the creative competition and hosted an engaging and inspiring awards event for the young people. Click here to see all the entries, and below for the winning entry, “Times of Change” by Chris Vickers.
